Story:

This Sunday afternoon, I was able to interview Ms. Sarah Nadeau. In her experience as a therapist, she has concluded that social media’s ideal body image contributes to but is not the sole cause of depression, eating disorders, stress and anxiety among teens; social media reinforces the preconceived notions teens have about themselves. For example, a teenager raised to believe that she is unattractive will become more vulnerable to depression after being exposed to social media. She will compare herself with the photo shopped images of models on magazines, reinforcing the fact that she is nothing like the photos. As a Huffington Post article furthers, social media “has been scientifically linked with causing depression in young girls. Ms. Nadeau also explained common sources of the problems her patients deal with. Among these are family matters, peer pressure, and adjusting to social expectations as students mature. This interview remind me that the correlation of low self-esteem and depression within my data is not necessarily a causation relationship. I am grateful I was able to interview Ms. Nadeau and I look forward to continuing my data analysis with a broader mindset. Please look forward to my next blog which will introduce my analysis thus far!
